“My first week so far has been absolutely amazing! After being welcomed in so easily to the group I got to learn about the research I will be taking part in: white shark fin ID’s, elasmobranch tagging and rocky shore surveys.
Going out on the white shark boat for the first time was such an incredible moment. It was a beautiful day and five different sharks came up to the boat. I jumped at the opportunity to get in the cage and it wasn’t scary or nerve-wracking – just amazing. Due to bad weather this week I only went on the boat twice, but on our days off we went to Hermanus and I was shown around town. We went for a walk on the Hermanus Cliff Path next to the beach which was was gorgeous and we also went fishing to tag smaller sharks, both from shore and from a fishing boat.
It has been a spectacular week so far!” – Taylor Smith
