SMRI works with SANBI by providing research data collected on smaller shark species found within our local kelp forest ecosystems. This ongoing data contribution helps support a better understanding of South Africa’s marine biodiversity and the conservation of these important coastal habitats.

SMRI contributes local shark species data to the Oceanographic Research Institute (ORI), gathered through research trips at sea, snorkelling surveys, shoreline monitoring and ethical catch-and-release tagging. Our long-term work has helped build one of the largest smaller shark databases in the area, supporting research into shark diversity, movement and conservation.
In 2025, SMRI received research support from Go Ocean, which helped fund our shark monitoring activities in the Gansbaai region. This support enabled field-based research trips focused on local shark species, including smaller and endemic sharks found in our coastal and kelp forest ecosystems. Through boat-based surveys, snorkelling, shoreline monitoring and ethical catch-and-release work, this project contributed valuable data on shark diversity, habitat use and conservation needs.
