“Today is my last day in South Africa and I can happily say that this past month has been a wonderful experience. I got to tag 4 shy sharks (which was terrifying at first but after I got used to it, it was actually really cool) and on my last day out at sea I finally went in the cage! The white sharks are even more magnificent when you are in the water with them. I then also had the privilege of meeting Dr Sara Andreotti who came to the volunteer house to tell us about her white shark research. I learnt a lot about dorsal fin ID photos and how they use this in combination with genetics to determine a population size for white sharks in South Africa.
A highlight was definitely when the marketing intern, Ansa and myself went bungee jumping at Bloukrans. I would recommend this to everyone as it is certainly an unforgettable experience! I also did a ziplining tour in the mountains. The South African mountains are a sight that I will never forget. This program is a wonderful opportunity to gain field experience in marine biology as well as the opportunity to witness the amazing beauty of South Africa.” – Katie Janeczko
