The overall lack of empirical data can seriously restrict our understanding of the ecological interactions among marine species. It has been documented that the loss of top marine predators has a series of negative repercussions on marine ecosystems. In this article, we propose an integrated strategy employing genetic and mark-recapture methods to evaluate white shark population estimates (Carcharodon carcharias). In Gansbaai, South Africa, 426 white sharks’ dorsal fins were photographed between 2009 and 2011 and used in 4389 mark-recapture studies.
